Ignoring pages does not make the problem go away.

I’m serious. Ignoring me isn’t going to magically make the patient better.

When this is on in my patient’s room, I prepare myself for at least two offensive comments during the day.

'Murica.

If we really saw war, what war does to young minds and bodies, it would be impossible to embrace the myth of war. If we had to stand over the mangled corpses of schoolchildren killed in Afghanistan and listen to the wails of their parents, we would not be able to repeat clichés we use to justify war. This is why war is carefully sanitized. This is why we are given war’s perverse and dark thrill but are spared from seeing war’s consequences. The mythic visions of war keep it heroic and entertaining…

The wounded, the crippled, and the dead are, in this great charade, swiftly carted offstage. They are war’s refuse. We do not see them. We do not hear them. They are doomed, like wandering spirits, to float around the edges of our consciousness, ignored, even reviled. The message they tell is too painful for us to hear. We prefer to celebrate ourselves and our nation by imbibing the myths of glory, honor, patriotism, and heroism, words that in combat become empty and meaningless.

Sometimes patients with altered mental status say funny things.

  • 1: Okay, sir, it's time to go downstairs to get your chest x-ray.
  • 2: No, some things ought to stay private. I don't want my doctor to put a picture of my chest on his desk.
  • 1: He doesn't do that.
  • 2: He does. He told me he does.
  • (Sigh.)

A patient’s wife said this to me on Monday when I walked into the room.  What a sweet and wonderful thing to say to someone.

Been rereading Lord of the Rings :)

  • 1: The world is all grown strange... How shall a man judge what to do in such times?
  • 2: As he has ever judged; good and ill have not changed since yesteryear.

If you’re going to yell at me when your husband’s NG tube leaks, you could at least pretend to be interested in his condition when he says he thinks he’s having a stroke.

Random nursing thought #1

I loved hearing this from patients when I was a nursing student, but now that I am RN BSN… Should I be insulted?
